Hot Songs to Set the Mood
Like many geeky people, I have spent a lot of time making the perfect mixed tape (er, playlist) for the perfect mood—from work playlists to romantic ones, special collections for my husband to play in the car (complete with tons of scribbled notes in Sharpie ink on the front of all of them—volumes one through five) to workout mixes for my daughter and me to get down with our bad selves. Sexy music isn’t my strong point, because it took a long time for me to embrace my own sensuality to begin with.
Getting older helps with that, though, as I’m sure many can attest to, and recently I put together a pretty sexy list of songs, if I do say so myself. You might groan, “That’s old school!” with many of these, but I’m cool with that, since I was born in the 80s and they are meaningful to me…
- Boyz II Men, “I’ll Make Love to You.” I’m getting the cheesiest song out of the way first! This one is quite obvious, with its frank lyrics and obvious 90s soul. I assure you, it’s hot.
- Paula Cole, “Feelin’ Love.” This song is incredibly hot, but be warned; its lyrics are a bit vulgar. It’s featured on the City of Angels soundtrack, though you’d expect it on something like 9 ½ Weeks. It’s utterly steamy.
- Patti Smith, “Because the Night.” This song works on so many levels for me. It’s a quick song I love to belt out while cleaning, but it’s also sexy.
- Aretha Franklin, “Chain of Fools.” Franklin can sing; there’s no doubt about that. And her voice was made for makin’ out to. “Chain of Fools” might not be the most empowering song, but man oh man, is it something that you can definitely start messing around to! A similar thing can be said about Dusty Springfield’s sensual “Son of a Preacher Man.”
- TLC, “Red Light Special.” TLC’s gorgeous makeout song is so hot it’s smoking. Where the group’s beautiful but morose “Waterfalls” made you want to go and scrub yourself down and get tested for STDs, “Red Light Special” makes you want to get naked. Immediately.
- Marvin Gaye, “Let’s Get It On.” You might argue for “Sexual Healing” instead of this classic, but I could never get into that one as much as this absolutely beautiful, sexy song. I don’t think any makeout list is complete without “Let’s Get It On.”
- Norah Jones, “Come Away with Me.” This is one of my favorite slow, modern jazzy songs, and my all-time favorite by Jones. It’s perfect for some slow dancing and even slower kissing.
- Heart, “All I Wanna Do (Is Make Love to You).” This one is so bad! It’s about cheating! And unplanned pregnancies with a father you fail to notify afterward! But it’s just so sexy and dreamy. Yeah, we’ve made out to this one. The same goes for their “Magic Man.”
I would love to hear/view your own playlists, too, so feel free to post them or link to them in the comments.
